Ryan Martin will not let his upcoming title fight distract him from extending his perfect start to life in the pro ranks when he returns to action this weekend.
The up-and-coming young starlet will step into the ring for the first time since April this Saturday, when he takes part in KM Promotions’ Gloucester show.
Martin, who’s flourishing career has been disrupted by a spate of injuries, discovered last week that he will compete for his first-ever professional title next month when he tussles with Faheem Khan for the Championship Welterweight Title at the Oasis Leisure Centre on Saturday 24th October.
That will pose as the 21-year-old’s most important fight so far, but Martin is determined not to let that distract him from the task at hand on Saturday.
“I’m really eager to fight again but I’ve started the week off really nice and relaxed, I’m just tapering down in training now and it is all about sharpening up now and getting the last few pounds off,” Martin told FLIC SPORT.
“I’m feeling good.
“I’ve got to snap myself out of it (thinking about his upcoming title fight) and remind myself to concentrate on one fight at a time, but I’m ambitious and I don’t think about losing.
“I expect to come home with a win on Saturday night, so I’m always looking towards the next thing but I need to try and remember my opponent can fight as well and I’ve got to get through him first.
“I’m injury free, training is going well and I’m fit already so I’m going to be well up for it in October.”
Martin has come across plenty of problems in terms of trying to nail down an opponent for this weekend, with a late cancellation not helping their cause.
But, Martin’s trainer Richard Farnan and promoter Keith Mayo have now settled on 38-year-old Ali Wyatt, who has won four, drawn two and lost 26 of his 32 bouts in the pro ranks.
“We’ve had some complications. Keith was struggling to match me and we ended up finding a guy from London, but he was out fighting the weekend just gone and got stopped, so he’s out for 28 days,” added Martin.
“Keith and Rich have now decided on an opponent called Ali Wyatt. I’ve watched a bit of him on YouTube and he’s strong, and he’ll definitely try and cause an upset.”
